Len's late arrival!

Created by Robin 2 years ago

At the height of the activities of KAHRS we frequently held meetings at Headcorn airfield in one of the crew rooms. It meant clambouring up a very steep and long stairway and with the meetings usually beginning at around 2pm, most of the members were sitting by just after 2pm. Opening the meeting the chairman (then Roy Humphreys) would start to talk and we would all say 'hang on Roy, Len is not here yet'. Ten minutes later there would be shoes on the stairway, lots of huffing and puffing and enter Len. 'Sorry I'm late chaps, traffic was awful;'. In his usual sports jacket, cheque shirt and high polished shoes, Len looked the true gent that he was. Quietly spoken yet a fountain of knowledge he would produce some amazing black and white photos taken from the air of all the Kent airfields.

This was Len Pilkington, a gentleman I am proud to have known. He helped me with photos for my books and on my visits to his house in Tonbridge we would sit and just talk aviation. Len you will be truly missed but never forgotten. The Kent aviation scene has lost a true trojan of aviation.
